“A solid and very necessary book.”
Why Film School?
Don’t be too quick to answer. Given the time and cost, it’s worth thinking long and hard on this.
If you don’t know much about film making or film schools, there’s a lot to consider before embarking on a career that may not suit your personality or lifestyle. Research and self-reflection is important. While there has never been a more dynamic time to be in film school, it’s never been more expensive to attend a good program. That’s why you need to think about what you want out of an education, and how to get the best bang for your buck.
PRIMER focuses on film production programs where students make films as part of their academic experience. Student films have great potential, and have launched successful careers. The films you make will be more important than your diploma. That’s what makes film school different. The goal for the 21st century film student is to graduate with credit on a strong film, meaningful relationships, and a clear understanding of a career in the entertainment industry.
Film making is about risk-taking, but film education doesn’t have to be. PRIMER promotes a simple-to-follow idea — be as prepared as possible.
Making Films
Film education is about specializations: writing, directing, producing, cinematography, production design, sound, and post-production
Mastering the skills and tools of each department is only one part of the film school experience: you also need to be a good communicator because you’ll be working in teams.Collaboration and teamwork are fundamental. Managing people - particularly creative people - is a highly-valued skill. Being a trusted team player is equally important. You assemble your cast, crew and equipment, but you also need an original idea.
PRIMER shows you how to turn your film school into a film studio.
Studying Films
If you’re going to make films, you have to ‘study’ them. There’s much to learn from filmmakers who have come before.
Films are complex and multi-layered. A good film makes you feel something. But the techniques that filmmakers use to achieve an emotional reaction are not always easily understood. Great filmmakers are like magicians — they make it look easy and you don’t know how they do it unless you really pay attention. That’s why studying films is essential. It reveals the magic.
Knowing the classics will serve you well, and it’s something you can do on your own. Homework you can enjoy.
“A recommended read for anyone who is serious about exploring filmmaking through an academic institution.”
