NURTURE RELATIONSHIPS

Successful film students point to the meaningful relationships formed in film school as one of the most important and positive aspects of their education. Like relationships, filmmaking requires dedication, trust, and teamwork.

Signing up for film school means joining forces with a group of like-minded individuals, participating in supporting roles, and helping others realize their best possible work. If everyone on the team is focused on the same goal, new friendships are sure to be forged - and many last long after graduation day.

Teambuilding is sometimes overlooked as a necessary component for film production curriculum, but it’s importance should not be underestimated. Programs that include hands-on creative team exercises — other than making a film — help their students develop stronger interpersonal bonds.

The benefits of learning strategies for conflict-resolution and reaching mutually agreeable outcomes for difficult situations is a win-win for students, as well as the administration.

Film sets can be stressful environments. Removing the stress of production by having students engage in fun, low-stakes, workshop activities that focus on teamwork dynamics and creative problem-solving can result in student film teams communicating better, reducing stress, and working more effectively and efficiently.

Good teams, more often than not, have good filmmaking experiences. Good experiences develop friendships.

Some film schools are competitive by design, with numerous students vying for the coveted role of director or cinematographer. In some programs, the faculty decides the key creative and crew positions, which leaves many students frustrated and unhappy. But the industry is inherently competitive, too.

Knowing and practicing the merits of being a good team member helps graduates use their film school experience for nurturing relationships in their professional careers.

In life after film school, one never knows when a former classmate will show up on the call sheet for a day on set. What happiness and fun! Or even better, when a film school friend unexpectedly calls to invite you to join them on an exciting, new project.

People want to work with people they can trust, and film school is a great place to learn the fundamentals of relationship dynamics
